This large, spreading spinach has deep-green, curled leaves. It’s a good yielding, dependable home garden variety that is fairly resistant to bolting. Spinach is delicious steamed, fresh in salads, and in soups and casseroles.

Spinach – Bloomsdale – Spinacia oleracea

Soil & Water: Spinach prefers loose, well-drained soil with moderate nutrients enriched with plenty of added organic matter. Soil pH preference is 6.5-7.5.

Planting & Growing: In spring, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, and set out 3-6 weeks before the last frost date. Spinach prefers cool weather and can handle light frosts. For a fall crop, sow seeds in a protected area 8 weeks before the first frost. Bloomsdale will tolerate temperatures down to 15-20F. Cover with a floating row cover or a frost blanket to increase cold tolerance.

Harvesting & Storage: Treat spinach as a cut-and-come again plant, or harvest outside leaves individually. Use fresh, freeze, or can.
